Game Description

Hong Kong 97 is an infamously bizarre and controversial unlicensed game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in 1995, it has since achieved cult status among retro gaming enthusiasts due to its peculiar storyline, low-quality graphics, and extreme difficulty.

Storyline

Set in 1997, the game follows Chin, a relative of Bruce Lee, who is hired by the Hong Kong government to eliminate the entire population of mainland China. The final boss is a resurrected Tong Shau Ping (a clear reference to Deng Xiaoping).

Gameplay

The game consists of a single screen where the player controls Chin, shooting oncoming enemies. It's known for its extreme difficulty and abrupt ending that loops the game, creating an endless cycle of increasingly challenging gameplay.

Cultural Impact

Despite (or perhaps because of) its low production values, Hong Kong 97 has become a subject of fascination in the retro gaming community. Its outlandish premise and unusual development history have made it a highly sought-after collector's item.
